When it comes to seeing realistic women on nighttime television, Sara Ramirez is just what the doctor ordered. The 5-foot-9, 31-year-old actress plays orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres on the hot medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy.” She took the part after a real-life bone injury she received on stage playing Lady of the Lake in Broadway’s Spamalot.



Both Mexican-born and plus-size, actress Ramirez represents both an important segment of the Latin community and the plus size population in the United States, which has traditionally been under-represented in Hollywood. Ramirez, along with America Ferrera of "Ugly Betty", demonstrates a “mini boom” of Latina women with curves starring in hit television shows.



“I’ve had a lot of feedback from people in the street who are grateful we now have a different body type on T.V.,” Ramirez recently said in an interview with OK! Magazine. “It’s helped their own self-esteem.”



Although Ramirez is comfortable with her body, she says weight has always been an issue for her, and she has put on some pounds since leaving Broadway. She admits she has made some bad decisions but is “starting to get a grip on what it means to be healthy, which means finding room for fruits and vegetables and daily exercise,” she said to OK! Magazine.



Ramirez has a boyfriend but prefers to keep her personal life private. On "Grey’s Anatomy", the sexy actress is currently coupled with steamy intern George played by T.R. Knightly.
